Read about the holocaust, and check out some images and videos from The United States Holocaust Museum. Visit the following link: The United States Holocaust Memorial. Prepare to discuss the following questions in class:
1. What does the word "Holocaust" mean? How does this apply to the event it describes?
2. The Nazis came into power in 1933. They believed that Germans were "racially superior." What groups of people were considered "racially inferior?" Why?
3. Historically speaking, what contributed to the scapegoating of these "racially inferior" groups? (what happened to Germany during WWI)
4. What kinds of atrocities were allowed to go on during the Holocaust? When did the world finally step in?
5. What thoughts and emotions do you have when you watch any of the historical footage pieces? Describe.
